Cubs agree to terms with Ohman

Ohman's Major League stats

The Chicago Cubs today announced that the club has agreed to a two-year deal through the 2008 season with left-handed pitcher Will Ohman.

Ohman, 29, set career-highs with 78 games pitched, 65.1 innings and 74 strikeouts with Chicago in 2006. He led the club by stranding 80.5-percent of his inherited runners (33-for-41) and limiting hitters to a .208 batting average. He held opponents scoreless in 63 of his 78 relief appearances and struck out at least one batter in 51 of his 78 outings.

Originally selected by the Cubs in the eighth round of the 1998 First-Year Player Draft (scout: Steve Fuller), Ohman owns a 4-4 career mark with a 4.15 ERA (57 ER/123.2 IP) in 164 relief appearances. He has limited opposing hitters to a .217 batting average (101-for-465), including a .183 mark (39-for-213) against left-handed hitters. The Mesa, Ariz., native has excelled on the road, logging a 2.57 career ERA (19 ER/66.2 IP) in 90 games away from the Friendly Confines.
Ohman, who missed the 2002 and 2003 seasons recovering from left elbow surgeries, has a 3.64 ERA (44 ER/108.2 IP) in 147 games for the Cubs over the last two campaigns.
